Updates, Upgrades and New Digs

In the next few weeks I will be moving this site – along with a few others – to a new host…

While this is not a process I’m looking forward to, I am sure I will be much happier with the new space. Ideally, there should be no noticeable down time, but I won’t make any promises.

Rather than update to the latest version of WordPress, I’ve decided to make the move with 3.2 and implement the upgrade at the new host. I’ve already begun transferring files and hope to have the move completed in the next few days.

Until then, carry on.

Falling Behind

I know, I know. A few more posts I owe… The good news is that there are several developments happening in the next few days that should provide plenty of worthwhile post fodder.

Stay tuned.

Fun in The App Store

As you may have heard, Apple launched the App Store for Macs on Wednesday. If you’re familiar with the App Store for iOS devices, you can find your way around the App Store for Mac.

Now, as a long-time Apple Fanboy, I was a frequent visitor to the Downloads section of Apple.com. I’ve been downloading, testing, and using the wares available there since I was a wee lad with a MacBook G3. The App Store is replacing the Downloads section at Apple.com. Great for developers, not so much for demo junkies and shareware trolls. Now, there are still plenty of free apps available in the store, but I always looked forward to a test drive before I plunked down the loot for a new piece of software.

I’ve already grabbed a few of the free essentials including Caffeine and Twitter, and even paid for an app or six thanks to an abundance of iTunes gift cards I got for Christmas. (Thanks Travis!)

If you’re a numbers person or just overly cautious with your own personal finances, I highly recommend MoneyWell. It’s a great way to manage and track your accounts and may help you save a few bucks to spend on more apps!

I’m looking forward to playing with SoundCloud and MindNode, but I’m always looking for new things. Feel free to share your recommendations.

What I Should Have Done

Yet another suggested topic sourced from Post A Day…

A list of things I wish I had done in 2010:

  • Quit Smoking
  • Learn a new skill
  • Get more exercise
  • Redesign this site
  • Take more photos

The list could go on and on… Of course, there’s always 2011.

These Dogs

Squirrel

This is a suggested topic from the Post A Day Challenge at WordPress.com… I’m not entirely sure that my (self-hosted) posts will be noted, but I like the idea behind this challenge and I’m going to run with it…

When I read the suggested post topic, the first thing that came to mind was my dogs… No matter what, I can always think of the dogs and smile, even when I know they’re being complete shits.

The girls are five now, going on two… They’re both still happy little pups for the most part and we don’t see any sign of them slowing down. They both still have their own uniques personality traits and attitudes, and they both can be sweet as pie when they want to be.

Lola, the shepard mix, has developed an affinity for Shannon’s shoes. Specifically her slippers. At first, when we would catch her sneaking out of the room with one, we would give her a firm scolding and watch her drop the prize and slip out of sight. Lately, it’s become a game of sorts. I have a theory about Bodhi (the aussie mix) creating a diversion so that Lola can sneak another slipper back to her lair. Here we are months later with at least one of three different pairs of slippers lining the bottom of Lola’s kennel. She won’t chew them up, she just likes to sleep with them for some reason…

Our dogs – most dogs in fact - bring a smile to my face.

Of course, as I write this, I can think of a dozen other things that make me smile that may have made for better reading… Becoming a husband, a father, a homeowner… I’ll save each of those things for another post.
